Filling small holes or cracks with spackle or joint compound, using mesh or fiberglass tape for larger cracks, and patching large holes with a new piece of drywall. The process includes cleaning the damaged area, applying the filler, letting it dry, sanding it smooth, and then applying paint to finish the repair.

For small cracks or divots

  • Cleaning the area: Using a utility knife to widen the crack and brush away any loose debris.

  • Applying spackle: Using a putty knife to fill the crack with lightweight spackle. For cracks.

  • Sand smooth: Once the spackle is dry (it may change color to indicate dryness), sanding the area until it's smooth.

  • Prime and paint: Brushing away dust and apply a coat of paint to finish the repair.

For larger holes

  • Cutting the damaged area: Cutting the damaged section into a clean square or rectangle using a drywall saw.

  • Creating a backing: For holes without a stud on one side, installing a furring strip.

  • Attaching the patch: Screwing the new piece of drywall into the furring strips, sinking the screw heads slightly below the surface.

  • Applying joint tape and compound: Applying joint tape over the seams and covering it with joint compound.

  • Applying additional coats: After first coat of joint compound dry completely, sanding it smooth. Applying a second, thinner coat and sand again if needed.

  • Finishing: Once the final coat is dry and sanded smooth, the area can be primed and painted to match the rest of the wall.
